Would you go on holiday with friends?

I had a lovely lunch with Jeanette today (it's SO good to actually look people in the eyes and connect properly). We sat outside under the trees while autumn leaves drifted onto our table. Well worth getting out in the fresh air even though I had to catch up on work later.

Anyway, we chatted a little bit about something D and I also talked about on Monday - holidaying with friends.

Would you?
Do you?

When D and I discussed it earlier this week, we decided we'd probably only go on holiday with two sets of our friends (locally - we went on a weekend away with the one set once pre-kids) and there are another two overseas (who we have stayed with).

The thing they all have in common?

They're all super laid back with the things that count, or they care about things we don't (my one friend loves to cook and she is very welcome to take control) so can "take over" on the things that matter to them.

I took this pic at this same place nearly two years ago :) Today there were no bottles!

Jeanette and I agreed that it's never optimal because we both like our space, but it was interesting to talk about.

Mind you, I'm sure girls' weekends away would be easier...

How do you feel about it?

  1. Great question. We've done it twice, once was great the other not so much. We had a great time, but I saw the non-laid back side of the wife while we were on vacation and that did take the fun out. So you are correct, laid back people are the best to vacation with.

  2. We've done a few weekend trips with friends, but it was during our student days. It's definitely not something we'd do now, the kids are till too young for it to work. And a fair number of folks are living overseas, or don't game as much any more.

  3. Certain friends yes, others no. Laid back, go with the flow - or in reality the husbands schedule - is a must:)

  4. You definitely can't do it with just anyone! And everybody needs a corner that they can retreat to if they need it.

    1. True! My one friend Beth who is a big introvert always goes on these big family holidays and I asked her how she does it. She said "we're mostly introverts so no-one feels the slightest bit strange about going off and having an hour or two by themselves"

  5. I do love real connecting so much. We are actually contemplating a beach holiday in Phuket with our closest friends. They have been there before and they are so similar to me and K that I am pretty sure we will have a blast together.

    1. That sounds great! Our one set (who we'd go with) just came back from Phuket and at the time I said, WE WILL GO WITH YOU!

  7. I really love going away with Mandy and family. We keep things together but separate and it works wonderfully! I the key to our success is that we have separate accommodations so we each have our own space and can carry on our normal routines. It's a built in breather. It might also help that we never meet up for very long.

I whole-heartedly agree that you have to find people you're really compatible with. I'm not sure there are many other people I could tootle around with.

  8. It depends. If we are going to be stuck in self- catering type accommodation together - BIG NO!!! If each has their own space but we get together to do stuff together BIG YES!!! Does that make sense. I don't want to be bothered with whether someone is laid back or fussy while I'm on holiday trying to relax.

    1. Yes! Only way we could go away with in-laws...

  9. I think the key to this is while you are way together that each family / set of people have their own space to retreat to when it's needed. I also think that the key to having this work is the length of the stay - so a long weekend or a few days but not much longer than a week.

That said we don't really have any friends to go away with and go away more with family.

  10. Girls weekends - any time. Holidays with friends - really only two families I can think of. Although we have been thinking about a weekend with 3 other families (2 of A's friends, one of C's friends). But one do need families with just your little family - no others, no grandparents

  11. There are most definitely only certain people I would holiday with!

We had the best time away with friends last year. Would definitely do it again and again. (https://alfinos.wordpress.com/2015/01/16/that-time-we-unplugged-for-5-days-petervale-farm/)

  13. We've done it before and NO, we won't do it again for the simple reason that sometimes we kind of want to be antisocial and go on our own little expeditions and it's rude to be like that if you're with others. I only do it with family. Because then you can take a walk while they are all around the pool or whatever.
I have done a girls weekend away. Twice. It was GREAT. But maybe that was because I didn't share a room with any of them?
