A good day and gratitude
Today was a good day.
I think from now onwards, any non-Vaseline day is going to be good :)
I had my first mentoring session this morning and got some cool personal insights from the facilitator. It was not all sunshine and roses though as there were some who were very negative, not about me, but about parts of the process.
That session ended 40 minutes early - bliss since I desperately need some desk time at work because my to-do list is growing daily.
We had our divisional awards event this afternoon - again, fantastic. Short and to the point, with yummy food, dancing and connecting with team members. And home by 5:30 pm :)
There are only 7 awards up for grabs out of 350 ppl. One of our own won an award and the other 3 of us at the table all burst into happy tears.
I was and am so proud, it's like I won the darn thing. I do feel a little bit guilty that I didn't nominate a single person - I was feeling stroppy at the time of nominations. Apparently my boss and another senior person nominated me which is a really nice pat on the back but adds to the guilt.
Moving on...
I re-recorded the section of my workshop tonight and my heart nearly stopped when after 50 minutes I checked and didn't see anything in my folder... but it had saved in another folder. I seriously would have FLIPPED out. How I hate technology when it doesn't work.
As for the babies... Connor's new trick is climbing onto the back of the couch and perching there. My heart stopped the first time I saw this and I had to refrain from screaming and surprising him.
V tells me that he got even more creative today by holding onto the security gate (trellidor-type thing) and walking along the bottom section of horizontal bars. I am DONE!
Do you have a climber? Do you let them? How do you create some safety?
Mine spur one another on. I already see Kendra trying to climb things...
And then, my parcel full of cuteness arrived today. I am beyond excited to start making stuff. She also sent me extra things not pictured - so nice of her.
I also have another parcel full of crafty goodness arriving tomorrow. I couldn't resist ordering some stuff from Scrapadoodles and since I email them so often (!), I've even asked the lady to please get some washi tape in :)
By the way, do you consider yourself a grateful person?
If yes, how do you stay grateful?
PS the photos just make me happy; they have sweet nothing to do with this post :)

Keeping it real
You know how I've been raving about how much I love this stage?
Well, let's keep it real.
This morning D says to me in that tone, "Marcia, please come see the kids" and when I went to their bedroom, they were COVERED in vaseline.
They'd got into the bag inside their nappy bag, Connor opened the container and they smeared the Vaseline on their hair, babygrows and Friday (Connor's teddy).
All I can say is that it's a good thing I wasn't properly awake because I would have flipped properly.
I tried to scrape some blobs back into the jar and then gave up.
I eventually took those cloth nappies and tried to get as much as I could out of their hair and off their hands and faces.
It was terrible.
Terrible.
All through this Connor keeps insisting that he's a good boy and I said, "no, you're a naughty boy".
Then he says, "Connor and Kenna very naughty" which is what D had been saying.
I know I'm going against the parenting books and whatnot (the lady from the course too) by calling them naughty but they are naughty!
Even my boss said, "no, Marsh, they did naughty things" and I said, "NO! they are naughty!" LOL
Do you call your kids naughty?
Oy! So when V arrived we bathed them and washed their hair about 3 times each and it's STILL oily.
Anyway, eventually I get dressed and leave for work.
I'm about a minute from home when I hear this sound to the left of my car.
I thought the passenger door wasn't closed properly so pulled over, opened and closed that door.
Set off again and still hear, "clunk clunk".
Stopped again and this time there were two policemen parked at the side of the road who said, "come look here" pointing to the front of my car.
I had a flat tyre.
Let me stop and say I have never in all my years of driving had ANYTHING go wrong (not even a traffic fine).
Of course I know ZIP about changing tyres so the one guy said they'd do it if I had a spare tyre.
I did and it was flat, so they changed it in 5 minutes and I drove straight to the nearest petrol station.
Can you believe it?!
First, I don't even want to think about what might have been if this had happened anywhere else but a quiet street in the suburbs. I was supposed to take my car to do my church talk last night but took D's because I was running a little late. If this had happened on the highway, I would have missed the talk and maybe even had an accident (we drive fast in Jhb and there's very little time to react to sudden stops). So I agree totally with the one policeman who said, "God blessed you today". Amen to that!
Second, two of this kind of nonsense in one day! Thankfully the rest of the day was good - I ran a meeting well (by accident because the real meeting organiser was late), and felt I added real value in two other meetings.
Oy!
And then...
I just ran my virtual organising workshop. Nearly half way through I suddenly thought to do a separate recording using my own software, not the fancy one I pay for! And I just clicked through and the proper recording's quality is not good. Thank goodness for the 1 hour 8 minutes I recorded but I'll have to record the first bit again to stay in integrity. Uggghhhhhhh - what a waste of time. I'll have to skip gym tomorrow to record it.
Overall score for the day - 6.
Largely due to these two. When I arrived home this evening, this is what I saw.
What was your score for the day?
PS I've been trying and trying and I can't seem to get into a sentence a day journal or even more. But what is working (only for 2 days now) is to rate the day and make a list of a few bullets to justify the rating. Do you journal?

Halfway to Zen
So on Saturday D went to a workshop and remember I said I was trying to organise a playdate.
Well, I invited a friend, didn't get a definite yes or no so I phoned (!) on Thursday to check if they were coming or not (do you think that's too much?).
After much to-ing and fro-ing (the two of us both talking to each others' voicemails), she got hold of me and said YES they were coming and what should she bring (nothing - btw, is it me but I always say "nothing" except for one set of very fussy friends who change what they drink every few months and I can't keep up, so I say "bring what you currently drink" :)).
Well, Sat morning she phones and says the weather's looking horrible (funny, it was LOVELY and GRAY :)) and she's not sure. We South Africans are nothing if not fickle about the weather.
Two hours later she phones and says the sun's out so they are definitely coming.
Can you guess where this is going?
That's right... she didn't pitch.
I practised my Happiness Project learnings (I'm not even joking), stayed present and in the moment, and decided to enjoy the time with my kids.
We PAINTED!
Outside, of course. I'm halfway to Zen but not mad.
(I was inspired by my post the other day)
They were adorable in their little aprons (my sister gave them an art set plus aprons for their birthday - she knows I don't like mess!!!).

Kendra got into the painting in a big way but she only likes to use one colour at a time?!

Connor was more interested in painting my walls, his sister's face and the table than anything else.
They both had jars of paint but Connor wanted to use her jar, not the ones on the table.
It was a really fun time - I loved seeing my little artists :)
I really want to just toss all their masterpieces but am I being too practical?
How much of the kid clutter do you keep?
(Natalie laughed at me the other day because I said I throw all their artwork away - I'm still waiting for the "art" in artwork)
PS. I made liquid hand soap and found a fabric softener substitute :)
PPS.
Paintbrushes - Crazy Store
Paint jars - old Purity prunes bottles, the same ones I used for some of the party stuff.

Working like a slave and overcoming procrastination
I've been working like a slave the past couple of nights:
Thursday - prepped my talk for tomorrow night
Friday - did the handout
Saturday - completely prepped my workshop for Tues and did the handbook and emailed the people who have registered thus far. Another mailing goes out tomorrow so there will be a last couple of stragglers, there always is.
I must say, even though it felt like a lot of pressure, I love this new way I'm doing things because it's actually saving me time.
Before I used to put together all the content, do the handbook and THEN start marketing (and hope I had enough people to make the time spent worthwhile).
This time I wrote out about 5 - 6 lines of what I wanted to cover, put up a sales page and waited for the people to register.
And of course only then churned the content and handbook out last night.
It felt a bit overwhelming when I first started but I did my procrastination trick (I tell myself I only need to work for 15 minutes and if it's really not coming together, if I'm not "flowing", then I can put it off til another day) and sure enough, the writing flowed (it always does) and now it's done.
It's about 7 pages longer than I was aiming for (23 instead of about 16 - I just thought 8 pages in an hour... 16 pages in 2 hours...) but it is nice and comprehensive and one person already emailed me back to say she's very excited for Tuesday.
And now I need to write some blog posts for Mon and Tues, because I'll be out on Mon til 9:30 and then busy on Tues til 9 pm again.
What are your tricks to overcome procrastination?
PS I feel like a genius and also a bit of a fool - you are going to be AMAZED at my post tomorrow about how I'm saving lots of money :) (I also spent R1100 today on plastics so don't get jealous yet :))
PPS finished the Happiness Project - loved it (8 out of 10) and want to start putting up some blog posts

Computer crafting on a Friday afternoon
Thanks for all your well wishes yesterday - I was home at 4:15, took a tablet and slept from 5 - 7 pm. Of course I was then up til 1:30......
So I've had a day of meetings and I'm all vegged out.
I decided to play around a bit and make draft 1 of our baby rules :)
What do you think?
And of course, this is the one I'm most proud of, because it took me about 30 minutes (and lots of frustration) the other day :)
Don't forget - get your list ready.
What are your baby rules? :)

What do you think?
My main rule is "keep calm and stop crying" :) Either that or "keep calm and stop whining". I don't do the crying or whining.
Okay, this was my first attempt at playing with headers...

7 random thoughts
- Listening to Michael Buble in the car at the moment. When I hear "the way you look tonight" I instantly think of Julia Roberts in My Best Friend's Wedding (my favourite movie) and I want to start crying. Oh, how I love that scene.
- There was a headline in the paper this morning, something about "neighbours from hell". Neighbours are one of those things in life where if they're good, you hardly notice them but if they're bad ones, they can make your life a living hell. I am SOOO thankful we currently have good ones on both sides. Previous house we had bad neighbours on the one side so the whole street became forced friends in order to deal with the problem. Yip, didn't happen - we eventually moved.
- Am feeling ill as I type this. I sincerely hope it's just a headache and not the salmon quiche a colleague brought for their birthday...
- A family was killed this morning. Mother with 1-year-old on lap was driving, father and 3-year-old were also in the car. One child was decapitated when the car collided with a bus. I cried immediately when I heard that on the news.
- I had a late meeting here yesterday and on my way back to my side of the building, ran into a friend and we caught up in the passage, as you do. I am SO thankful for my boss after hearing her stories about her bad boss. I think Wonderful Boss has spoiled it for other bosses. How could I ever leave him?!
- I moved my homeowner's insurance yesterday. When I phoned current insurer to cancel was told I have to phone the bank. And... it is a SCHLEP and a half. So much so I'm seriously reconsidering.. Do you think they make you fill in 3 pages of forms on purpose?! And send 4 additional documents.
- I'll be a single parent on Saturday as D is going to a workshop. Trying to organise a playdate/ mommy date to use up at least some of the time :)
What's happening with you today?
PS I think I'm going to go home - my head is THROBBING and I feel a bit ill in the tummy.

A first around these parts - playdough
I'm afraid I'm not one of those ultra-fun mothers who let their kids paint and "mess" in the house.
No way.
This is one time I fully embrace my J.
I don't mind contained messing though.
So I piled them in the highchairs and took out the playdough.
They were very keen on the shapes and the rolling pin - thankfully Mandy included all the props too :) LOVE it!
That kept them busy with me occasionally stepping in to demonstrate and play with the squishiness. I'm VERRRRRY tactile so I had tons of fun too.
And when they've shown me they can sit still and not fling it all over my house, I also have little pastry boards I bought at the plastics shop for them to use.
Where are you on the scale? 1 is absolutely no mess in the house; 10 is kids are kids, we can always paint over scribbled walls.
I'm a 4 - I allow some mess in only some parts of the house under the right conditions - clothes protected, tables protected, etc.
P.S. I'm loving some of the new blogger features like how I can upload tons of pics all at one time. Is it just me - I can't seem to upload more than 1 pic at a time in Wordpress... or am I doing it wrong?

On this particular day I needed to organise some things in the kitchen (you know when you just HAVE to sort out that cupboard because it's driving you batty???? It can't only be me!) and I needed the kids out of the way.If my kids don't respond well to something, I put it away and try again in a few months time.Like with the playdough. We got it at our Fertility Babies Christmas party hosted by Mandy - some of you may remember D and I were very impressed by her thoughtfulness. Our kids weren't too interested for a good few months and then it was winter and too cold becausewe'd stored the playdough in the fridge.

I think it's the weather
but I've been whizzing round the house organising up a storm.
The kids' clothes are all totally sorted:
I've just had labels laminated at work and will maybe take pics to show you...
Have you sorted out your kids' clothes yet?
By the way, do you do hand-me-down clothes?
I do... both ways. I love receiving clothes (obviously not broken or stained) and I love passing them on.
It's a huge saving and I'm a little bit sentimental in that I like thinking of my kids wearing their cousin's or friends' clothes.Especially around the house.
I do like buying some new things for the weekends when we're out but during the week they're at home and happily toddle around in older clothes.
Connor's enjoyed MANY of my nephew's old clothes and my sister loves seeing pics of him wearing them.
Same with us. I send Kendra's old but good clothes to PE and my sister sends me pics of my niece wearing K's old clothes. Some of them were so new I can't even remember K wearing them :)
What do you do with your kids' clothes once they outgrow them?
PS Have just had a late lunch with gorgeous Natalie and as usual, we talk too much. I think we need a lunch date every week so that we can eventually catch up.
The kids' clothes are all totally sorted:
- we have enough things for summer for each of them
- Connor's winter clothes have been packed up and were taken to the church on Sunday (our church supports an orphanage - babies right up to age 18 so they will and do take anything)
- Kendra's smaller clothes are on the bed in my study waiting to be packed up and posted to my sister. The post office was closed on Saturday when we went otherwise the package would have already been posted.

Easy washi tape crafts
First and most important
Please please please send me some links for cute things (but easy - none of those vases I see on Pinterest as I'm challenged spatially :)) to do with washi tape.
I'm prepping for the virtual craft day on 29th and need to start getting my mind ready.
I have quite a bit of washi tape (12 rolls) and want to do some crafts with those.
Here is the shop I buy from if any of you are interested.
Speaking of Pinterest, I followed a link from Pinterest recently, clicked around some and found this post.
LOVE it.
So true.
That is how we used to celebrate birthdays when I was a girl.
Who's participating in this month's virtual craft day? Do you know what you want to do yet?

Remembering
I was sitting in my office with the sun streaming through the window. It was about 3 pm in the afternoon.
I even remember what I was wearing - a taupe knee-length skirt and a navy sleeveless jacket (so you can see it really was hot!)with buttons down the front, pantihose and brown court shoes.
And I was on the phone to our IT department.
A guy called Lando was fixing something on my PC via a remote link.
Suddenly he said, "OH MY WORD, Marcia! Something's happened to the World Trade Centre"
Of course I thought he was joking - IT people have their own weird sense of humour, right?
But no.
I stayed on the phone with him while he told me that planes had flown into the WTC.
We were all shocked and horrified in the office but the true sense of what had happened didn't quite make sense until all the news came through.
Terrible, terrible times.
I was glued to Oprah over the next couple of months listening to all the stories of real people who had lost their families in this tragedy.
The guy at church yesterday (a visiting American pastor) pointed out that all this devastation was through one man's legacy.
Quite chilling when you think about how devastating it can be when impact goes the way of evil.
By the way, I was 27 at the time.
I've been reading accounts all over the internet about people still in school. Makes me feel old!
What were you doing on that day?
How did it impact you?
P.S. I wrote a piece for this book about D. It was released for 9/11 but the contributions are about ANY heroes in life. Enjoy – it’s free http://gratitudebookproject.com/?page_id=155#

Meeting Louisa... and the weekend recap
Louisa and I decided to meet bright and early (well, for me) at 9:30 on Saturday morning.
Let me tell you, I'm glad we made it a morning meet-up because it was HOT.
So hot I was very quickly reminded why I actually don't like summer and I even wrote a list in my "30 days of lists" book so I never forget.
Some things on that list - headaches, fat fingers and toes, and sweat :)
We went to Bambanani - I LOVE IT THERE because of the very safe play area and the very helpful staff - and it's not too far. It's like going to work, but carrying on for a while longer.
Louisa is just as she appears on the blog - down-to-earth, no-nonsense and a straight shooter!
I also love how you closed Nicola's ears when you swore that one time, Louisa - it is SO CUTE.
Speaking of cute, Nicola is totally adorable. And has more hair on one half of her head than both my kids' together :)
Connor came to me and said, "Mummy, naughty boy" pointing to another little one. When I asked him what happened, it seemed this little boy tried to take the toy that Connor was playing with. And so it starts... (btw, D verified that Connor's story was accurate - I'm under absolutely no illusions that my kids are angels!)
Louisa mentioned the bibs in her post ... remember we have a rule - "no bib, no food" and I stick to it. Apparently the church ladies don't have this same rule because both their clothes were soiled today when I collected them despite my note on their food bag and the bibs inside. *sigh* I really do hate laundry with a passion.
We had a lovely breakfast and chat and then had to leave in a rush (why is it that time speeds up toward the end. I checked my watch and it was 11 and then I looked again and it was 11:45 and we had to rush out of there) because V was coming over to babysit so we could have a date afternoon.
Of course I couldn't find my kiddie receipt and they don't let you leave with your kids (remember we live in South Africa where security is a very high priority) if you can't produce it.
Eventually they let us go. Even though that part was a huge schlep, I appreciate it because I would give them hell if they let my kids leave with someone else with a flimsy excuse.
Aside from that, I organised clothes like crazy, went for a date afternoon with D and decided on the holiday, cooked potato lentil curry.
Today was church (good message on what legacy are you leaving - just my thing :)) and a little mis-adventure (Kendra's nappy leaked and SOAKED her pants from stupid Huggies Gold, D & C went to church and K & I made a detour to Pep to get some more pants, and then back to church 30 minutes late because I refuse to buy things with sparkles and glitter...), kids watching some of Rugby World Cup with Daddy and me having a little nap.
All in all a good weekend.

Let me tell you, I'm glad we made it a morning meet-up because it was HOT.
So hot I was very quickly reminded why I actually don't like summer and I even wrote a list in my "30 days of lists" book so I never forget.

We went to Bambanani - I LOVE IT THERE because of the very safe play area and the very helpful staff - and it's not too far. It's like going to work, but carrying on for a while longer.
I've always had a love affair with Melville.
Kind-of like Parkhurst.
Slightly hippyish and bohemian - I think because both those suburbs remind me of my youth in Grahamstown (D and I studied and met at Rhodes - the BEST university EVER :)). The last time we drove around Melville I said to D, "we really MUST move to Melville".
He said, "are you really a Melville person or do you want to be a Melville person?" Hmmm. Although they do seem like suburbs Rhodes people go when they're grown up :) Am I mad?!She saw us immediately and thankfully, had snagged a table right next to the kids' play area so it was easy to keep an eye on them.

The Happiness Project
Five on Friday
1. Just got a new-old coaching client. She coached with me for a long time, and then stopped for 5 months and is now back. Since she's trying to lose weight I told her I'd join her in trying to eat better and exercise more this week.
2. Two random acts of kindness for me this week - someone bought me a piece of sinfully delicious fudge and my boss bought me a box of popcorn today. May I add that the popcorn was salted just enough. I'm fussy about the salt - I don't like salty foods - and this was perfect.
3. I asked my old personal trainer, Sara, to do a programme for me and it's just come through on my email. Really, this girl is fantastic and so nice, you can't help loving her. PTA ladies - if you want her details, mail me.
4. I'm 100% done with Connor's clothes. He has MORE than enough shorts and t-shirts, and after a vest-buying spree, now has enough short vests too. We might have a pj problem soon though because those legs have grown.
5. I have to check if V sorted the last of Kendra's winter clothes properly. She tends to be less ruthless than I am in what is too small. Otherwise, I'll be posting some clothes to my sister and then donating the rest. I've labelled everything in sight (punched circles with my 2 inch circle punch and attached to plastic tubs with prestik)
And what did I do for me this week?
1. I went out with a friend for pasta on Tuesday night. It was LOVELY to catch up with her and we said we need to do this more often. Next month is her birthday so that will keep the momentum going.
2. Amazingly, I dragged my butt to gym on Wed despite my headache. I had to leave 10 minutes early when it got really bad but 40 minutes is better than nothing, right? (I was 10 minutes late too!)
I forgot this not-so-little reason I don't enjoy the heat - headaches! I've had headaches about 3 out of the 5 days this week.
3. And I finally coloured my hair. It was about two months overdue but the thought of Louisa seeing all that grey tomorrow moved me to do it :)
4. I've been dog-tired at night so reading only 15 - 20 minutes before falling asleep. That's not going to do so I've started reading an extra 20 minutes in the mornings BEFORE getting dressed for work. Do you know how decadent that feels?
How was your week?

Ways in which I'm a strict mother - food
Source: thecraftingchicks.com via Marcia on Pinterest
I loved the comments from all of you where you said you're stricter than I am.
Love!
So I thought we should discuss them in a little more detail so I can catch some tips :)
Let's talk food.
We are still using The Notebook and, quite honestly, I think we're going to use it til my kids go to school :)
I started The Notebook because once Kendra came home, all ___ broke loose and my memory was shot from sleep deprivation and the craziness of newborn, prem twins.
I needed to regain a little bit of control and at least if anyone asked me anything I could refer to the book and answer with relative confidence. Instead of saying, "I have no idea what time her last bottle was or how much she had" (yes, it was that bad).
We love having the notebook for notes between V and us, and I can see when things change in their learning.
We adapted the categories over the two years and now keep track of times they eat and drink, and what that is, sleep times during the day and activities.
This is where D and I often have a chuckle in the evening when we see V writing "learning the alphabet" and "sang songs", etc. Too cute. It helps us feel a little more involved in their days.
We also seem like rock star parents when the kids go see the doctor or paed. When I took Connor the other week, I could tell her exactly when he started feeling out of sorts because V had a note that said, "Connor cried a lot today" LOL
Anyway, so we have some set things we feed the kids for each meal:
breakfast - weetbix, pronutro, oats (in winter)/ muesli (they had their first muesli on Spring Day - I thought they deserved something fun to celebrate the warm weather)/ maltabella (also in winter), toast with jam (C)/ cottage cheese (K), fruit and/ or yoghurt
lunch - bread/ toast with something protein (peanut butter/ cheese/ cottage cheese/ egg), and tomato/ cucumber/ etc. My children don't like their veggie part on the sandwich - they want it separate. In winter they also have soup most days. If they didn't want yoghurt after breakfast, they have it now.
snack - about a week ago, we had to move supper an hour later because they started waking at 4:30 am demanding milk (C) so we give them a fruit around 3:30.
supper - whatever we had the previous night, except curries - chicken a la King, spaghetti bolognaise, chicken and broccoli, kidney bean and tomato sauce on rice/ pasta/ baked potatoes, etc. Today they're having penne with a bolognaise sauce :)
My kids LOVE veggies. It's very weird but we're not complaining. We have to say, "eat your chicken and rice, and then you can get veggies". No jokes. And we hide the peas away til they've finished their food. No food, no veggies.
Also, have you ever heard a cute little boy say, "please Mummy have veggies" - it is TOO adorable. I must see if I can get it on video.
Notes
- I don't allow snacks in between meals. I like them nice and hungry so they eat well. This tactic seems to have worked because I have very good eaters. Matter of fact, I'm still waiting for my toddlers to eat like toddlers so I can save some money :) When I went to ToddlerSense last year, the woman said toddlers typically eat two bites of a sandwich, a grape, one bite of a banana and that's it. Um, not mine. But I'm not complaining because when they display less than stellar eating habits (when sick) it is not fun and I stress that they're not getting enough food. But I never show them my fear :)
- These are the options - my food or bread with peanut butter. Most times they eat my food but sometimes they opt for the bread.
- I try to remember to write in The Notebook what they need to have the next day but if I forget, V knows and will feed them appropriately. I also have a special section in the freezer for the babies' extra meals (for when we have curries) so V knows to take their meals from there.
- They have plain yoghurt 85% of the time because on Sundays I send those 100 ml tubs of yoghurt in their church lunch bag with a muffin each.
- We only let them eat in the highchairs - I don't allow running through the house with food because I don't want clean-up to be any more difficult than it has to be. That said, they don't eat as well when we go out... but I'm prepared for the fussiness 5% of the time.
- We also have a rule which they both know - "no bib, no food" - so if they take off their bibs, I say, "oh, have you finished eating?" and either it's yes, or they put those bibs back on.
- If lunch is light (we've run out of fruit), then I'll allow a muffin each. I always have muffins in the freezer. I bake the ones for the kids with almost no sugar and at least half a cup of veg (pumpkin/ butternut). They love it and now that they've "twigged", they "steal" from the freezer.
K Muffin
Me Where did you get it, Baby?
K Freezer (with absolutely no hint that she's doing something wrong)
They do get about 50 - 75 ml of juice a day, diluted 1:3/ 1:4, depending on the juice. Orange is not as sweet as tropical fruit.
I don't allow sweets at all but now and again, I'll give them a wine gum each. I'll allow chocolate sooner than sweets after discussions with my work friend who has an ADHD boy and keeps very careful track of the E numbers and whatnot.
Now and again they'll get a cupcake (without icing).
I know I'm very strict on the food - I would rate myself a 9 here :)
How do you fare?
Also, what kinds of food do your kids eat?
PS if this is not your thing, here's a gorgeous blog I found today.

This was going to be a wordless Wednesday post but...
There's a comment on my previous post which I thought I should address.
I think most of you regulars know I really don't mind (and enjoy) healthy debate and to be challenged.
BUT... I don't like it when people hide behind Anonymous. If you think I'm complaining and I should grow up, that's your opinion and is fair but please engage in a mature manner so I can respond to you.
I actually think that's the grown-up thing to do.
Anyway, moving on.
D took some pics of me sitting outside on the babies' swing/ slide on Saturday. It was only for a few minutes but I really enjoyed just being present and doing nothing.
I never really sit still and do nothing so it's something I'm always working on.
Do you find it easy to relax?

Where are you on the strict scale?
So I went to a talk last week called Shaping the will without breaking the child.
That's always been my concern with this discipline thing.
I love spunky, sassy kids (and looks like I got two of them!) and yet I also love well-mannered kids.
How do you find the balance?
D went to a talk by the same lady in Feb (I was babysitting since it was near where he works) and that's where he learnt about time-outs.
I still don't believe that time-outs in the same format work for every child.
I felt that Connor's personality was changing to slightly fearful and I love that God made him brave and fearless.
I won't rehash the past but I think we have a nice balance with him now.
Okay, back to the talk.
This woman is a brilliant marketer. Her talk was comprehensive enough and yet she seeded it so well with links to all her products and services that I was gobsmacked at how subtle and authentic it was.
Moving on...
I consider myself a strict mother. On a scale of 1 - 10, I'd probably be a 7.
But wow. If I had to do everything she suggests, even I would have to ramp it up on the strict scale.
I have a meeting so can't finish talking now...

This is Kendra in time-out and Connor decided to keep her company
As an aside, when my husband sent me the newsletter, I saw there was this talk happening and sent it out to all my friends.
Maybe it's just me but I get a bit irritated if people just ignore me. Some did say they weren't prepared to travel to Greenstone, etc. or didn't feel they needed it, etc. so those are not the problem. I just don't know why people don't say "thanks but no thanks".
Is it just me or would you also get annoyed?
I absolutely go to anything by myself but also think of these things as time to see friends.
One friend accepted my meeting invite and so we met up there. She'd dragged her sister along and so the three of us had a lovely time laughing, eating, drinking and hopefully learning too.
My best part was connecting with the two of them for 30 minutes before the thing started.
I first got all hot under the collar (you all do use this phrase, right? :)) but then calmed down a little and I've now decided to only send these things to the people who do respond.

It's my sheltered PE upbringing :)
We've just had a laugh in the office.
I read your comments on my previous post and noted that no-one knew the phrase nineteen to the dozen.
Of course I told the girls in the office and there was ... dead silence.
No-one here knew it either!
So then I said, "is this another PE thing?"
I've now googled and it turns out nineteen to the dozen is a UK idiom.
Here's the origin and here are two quick links to read more.
What are some weird things you say?
(well, that other people have pointed out to you. I still find "oh my hat" a very funny thing that the Cape Town gals say :))

I'm from PE and we'd previously decided that the fact I don't eat pap is solely because I'm from PE.
I'd never even heard of it before I moved to Jhb.
Of course the last time we had this discussion I emailed my sister and asked her if she knew of pap.
She also said no but that the first time she saw it was in their canteen at work (she still lives and works in PE).

Mother adrenaline
We went to church this morning and, as is our custom, I walked with Connor and D walked with Kendra.
There's a revolving door at the entrance. D and K were through already, and when Connor and I walked through, he must have stumbled because next thing I knew he was on the ground with his leg jammed under the revolving door which continued moving, about 10 cm up his leg.
At this point I would like to thank God because there was a gap of about 50 m before the next people behind us.
Connor started screaming.
I'm sorry to say I also screamed ("D, come help!") and I think my scream alarmed him even more.
I pushed my hand under that door (don't know how it fitted - mother adrenaline?) and tried to grab his leg loose.
Didn't work.
Then I heard someone say, "take off his shoe" and I pulled off his shoe and manually moved his ankle and leg.
(D told me later it was another man who came to help - I didn't even thank him properly!)
Next thing the leg was out.
By this time I was sitting on the floor of our little quarter and giving Connor lots of hugs and kisses.
And then we got up and I carried him out of there to children's church. Of course I wanted to just be with him but they ran into the class (still LOVE this) and told us, "bye Mummy, see you later", so off we went to church.
He was fine once his leg was free.
But I was not.
I couldn't stop thinking about this all through the worship and the beginning of the message. I actually had to give myself a mini talking-to so I could focus.
Children are so resilient - I was giving him all these extra kisses thinking about what could have been....................... and he was running along, talking nineteen to the dozen (do you use this phrase?).
D and I have just spoken and he says he felt so helpless and useless.
Interestingly enough, years ago our pastor pulled a heavy, 6-ft high gate off her daughter. She is not huge, nor does she have huge muscles so it was also mother adrenaline and God :)
So how was your Sunday?
PS Last Sunday was 20 and we wore jerseys. Today is 26/27 and we're all in shorts and T-shirts. My kids have lots of beautiful new t-shirts to wear - ALL gifts from last year's birthday and Christmas.
PPS My friend sent me a text and says, "I come alive in this weather" - LOVE THE PASSION.

Lists, perfectionism, hair and my Sept goals
I have 3 hours tonight and I've broken them into half-hour segments to get both computer stuff and things done around the house as D's at work and of course, the babies are sleeping.
I'm blogging for the first 30 mins and then will do a house task for 30 mins and so alternate computer/ house/ computer etc. And then at 10:30 I'm going to read.
I've been keeping up with my 30 days of lists project and I must say, it's quite therapeutic hand writing my lists.
Here are some terrible pics of my book - I am not letting perfectionism hold me back from posting these. See, I always say, "I can only do it in proper light and my hours at home of proper light are very "limited" (non-existent).
After the pics were taken I added some ribbons to the binder rings. I will take some pics again in "good light" (i.e. on a colleague's desk at work - all my favourite close-ups have been taken right there :)) as I used some ribbons from the party favours and want to show my friend, Roz.
Speaking of perfectionism, my monthly talk at the church is on 19 Sept and I can't WAIT to see what God's going to give me because I am extremely passionate about the topic - Perfectionism, Procrastination and People-Pleasing :) I'm a recovering perfectionist so speak from TONS of experience.
I'm loving the Brazilian hair treatment thing - I've now washed my hair twice (with the special expensive shampoo) and the first day it feels a bit "full" to me but from day 2, it is fabulous. If you see me and you don't think it's fabulous, that's okay - I know it's fabulous.
I can literally just wash and go - I don't put a single thing on my hair and it's smooth and non-frizzy. I have my curls but they're tame...
The only thing is... I desperately need to colour my hair (South Africans, Clicks has the 10-minute hair colour on special - banded pack of 2 boxes for R120 - I usually pay R135 PER BOX) and I'm scared to do it in case it messes up my treatment.

My goals for September
Personal
Business
Okay, that's a lot but I feel better about this month.
Also, I'm going away for one night this month for work - the babies will be fine but I'm going to miss them!
What are your goals for Sept? Link up!
P.S. An organising tip for these goals things - copy and paste the HTML of your "intentions" post in a new post and immediately change the title, whatnot so you can update on a regular basis, keep focussed and, best of all, you'll be ready to post at the end of the month.

My goals for September
Personal
- Register for e-filing and submit tax return. There's a story here. Years ago I tried and the system didn't like my long personal email address. I have a "thing" about getting personal things at work, especially financial things, so I just continued to do them all manually all these years. It takes me all of 10 minutes so is easy-peasy but a friend said to me, "Marcia, I submitted mine the night before we left for London. While we were there (they only spent 4 days there) I was spending my refund". Ka-ching - so that's got me moving.
- Colour hair
- Go for massage (was stood up by NEW lady last week!)
- Read 5 books
- Do 8 random acts of kindness
- Go to gym/ exercise 8 times
- Meet Louisa :)
- Lunch with Natalie (she doesn't know)
- Book December holiday. This is now crunch time. D is verrrry scared of driving anywhere with these two so we're at an impasse.
- Sort out children's summer clothes. Confession - I'm 95% done as I've been working furiously the last couple of days but it was on my list BEFORE the month started :)
- Finish July photos (remember my complicated system :))
- Finish August photos
- Get at least 10 signed up to this month's virtual craft day on 29 September (shameless plug) - as an aside, I wrote about my binder rings here
Business
- Spring into Organising workshop. Looks like I'm going to be cancelling the live workshop due to lack of interest, to put it bluntly.I don't think I'll be offering any more of these in Jhb. I have a tiny Jhb component - I actually checked my stats and there are 76 out of 2800 on my list. Actually 75 because one of those is me.The virtual workshop is going full steam ahead though. They're so fun and I get a HUGE kick out of doing a workshop in my pyjamas without make-up on! Isn't technology great?!
- Finish product revamp. Am about two hours away from revamping my most popular seller.
- Write article for a guest blog on effective delegating. It's funny, some things I'm okay at, some I'm good at but I'm excellent at delegating :)
- Send next 6 guest blogs to ____. I am the time and organising expert somewhere on the www.
- Do church talk on the 3 P's of time management
- Book and pay deposit for my book's design.
- Get book proof-read
- Write at least 10 posts for 1 - 10 Oct. I'm posting every day in Oct on my organising blog.
- Do two hours of next product revamp.
- Two hours of tidying up organising blog's sidebars
Okay, that's a lot but I feel better about this month.
Also, I'm going away for one night this month for work - the babies will be fine but I'm going to miss them!
What are your goals for Sept? Link up!
P.S. An organising tip for these goals things - copy and paste the HTML of your "intentions" post in a new post and immediately change the title, whatnot so you can update on a regular basis, keep focussed and, best of all, you'll be ready to post at the end of the month.

Are you missing me yet?
No?
Well, I'm missing you TONS.
I miss having the time to talk to you and I have (as usual) so much to say!
I have barely had time to blink, what with all the work I've been doing. I will make time to write a nice long blog tonight
In the meanwhile, here's a pic of me and Kendra, taken at the party on Saturday.

Hello September
We are SOOOOOO happy it's spring.
I was on the phone with a client earlier and we were joking about how all the girls are wearing skirts because we're all so happy it's not cold anymore.
It goes from cold to hot immediately in Jhb - on Sunday I was wearing corduroys and a jersey and four days later I'm wearing short sleeves, a skirt and sandals.
Amazing.

First, an update on last month's goals
