So I went to the Jozi meetup last Saturday.
I must say, I felt really odd at first, arriving and knowing absolutely no-one. Then I saw Heather and Laura, and later, Sharon, Sam and Funso, and Lebo. And Salome (photographer) who I first met at the event I spoke at in May last year.
I also recognised Wenchy but still haven't actually spoken to her :o
The not knowing people didn't bother me much because I'm an extrovert but it's odd to feel a bit out and yet know that I've been blogging for over 10 years. There's this whole community I'm not a part of so that was interesting. (this is a tip from Big Magic - when you find things "interesting" you turn down the level of drama :))
Anyway, 3 things about the event:
- The venue was amazing. I was so disappointed to not have time to walk around Maboneng afterwards because I had to rush off to another friends date. I would have had more photos if I had more hands to pull out my camera and carry the swag. The lift was gorgeous and the light was absolutely fabulous!
- We got such a lot of stuff in the goodie bags that I shared it all with Nanny S. I don't drink wine and we got a bottle of wine. I was going to give it to a friend (!) but D was aghast - how could I do that? So now I need to get rid of it but it feels so wasteful.
- I used to run workshops in my home and I know how much work it is to organise them, yet they had (for me) such small profit margins. So hats off to Laura and Heather - clearly they have the secret to make these things work. And when I want to next run a Love Languages workshop, they need to organise it :)
I realised that there are two types of blogs and bloggers, and I have/ am one of each. One is niched and has its own Instagram and Facebook page, and the other is written for the pure joy of connecting (and therapy!). Except... my Organising Queen blog is like such a baby because I have no idea about when "my people" are online, which brands I resonate with, and all of that jazz.
Honestly, I don't know where these people get the time to be checking all these stats and responding to everything throughout the day. Unless they don't work, or they're faffing around the whole day at work.
Blogging seems like a lot of hard work these days and clearly I'm not interested in doing all of that enough to "stay current".
It's largely because I do have a full-time job that pays me a reasonably good salary so I don't feel that I need to monetize anything.
Best quote: "what do all moms do the whole day? They're on Facebook, of course" and with that, I suddenly felt like, "who are these moms because I'm actually working, but maybe it's an age thing, or a firstborn thing...?
One more thing - brand love. How do you feel about instagramming and blogging for brands just because you received free product?
I posted one pic on IG on Sat from a hamper I won and I fully intended to post another to enter a competition (peer pressure?!), but suddenly I didn't feel right inside. I tend to listen to those feelings so nothing went up. I don't even eat those biscuits and actually, I had my first one this Saturday... and I wasn't wowed. The kids are eating them though!
What makes you post a "brand" pic on Insta or Facebook or your blog?
For me, I must be wild about the product, so wild I would have paid for it myself. Like I do with stationery :)
Which blog group do you fit into? Were you in one before consciously moving into another?
I have, of course, been blogging about organising, coaching, time management and goals for many, many years, simply because it's my passion, while this blog is my just my stress relief :)
PS don't you love this sewing machine?!
Love the sewing machine. Honestly I think I feel the same you do - I can not spend hours on blog stuff - I blog because I want to. When I feel I need to for my "brand" the magic disappears. So I guess I am quite comfortable to stay as I am and have no incline to become a "big blogger". I am sad I missed the social with you all - that's the best part of these things
ReplyDeleteGorgeous, hey?
DeleteThe socials are the best part - true!
I commented on another blog post about the Cape Town meetup but thought I'd share here too...although I blog myself, I really don't see myself as a "blogger" so attending the meetup has never crossed my mind. What goes on at these meetups?! Perhaps I should attend the next one...
ReplyDeleteWell, arrive, a speaker or two, then socialise. I actually think there should be two types of meetups - those for the serious bloggers and those who just share personally :)
DeleteI learned to sew on sewing machine like that, now I have a normal electric one. I blog for therapy and because I feel not so alone. There are other people like me. I also tend to skip posts that are for a product, because I find them a tad fake, sometimes.
ReplyDeleteMy (late) granny had one like that which I also learned to sew on.
DeleteConfession - I also just "mark as read" any brand posts, unless I'm also personally in love with the brand!
With you there, the build your brand bloggers have that as a part of their jobs. It's so not me. Blogging - and the meet ups - for me is all about the sense of community. We share and read people who feel similar to us in some form. The brand stuff leads to some of that feeling disappearing, it's a tricky thing.
ReplyDeleteAnd yet some people (not many South Africans - don't throw tomatoes at me) do this so well that it flows very authentically from who their blog is. Cup of Jo and Design Mom are amazing at this.
DeleteTrue, there are folks who do it well...but ja, you should be more than a brand. I have all over the place feelings on this.
DeleteI think there is a balance between blogging because you want to and blogging because you want to take it further. I also don't have time to do 6 posts on Facebook every day, I battle to put out posts and balance my job too. But I think you raise some important points, I certainly don't sit on Facebook all day but I do look at it alot after work. Maybe I miss my stay at home days but even then I was chasing after Nicky and keeping him entertained more than I was sitting on Facebook!
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, Heather, IF you want to "take it further", because you do need to put extra effort into anything you want to make a big success of.
DeleteI love the meet up's because I get to socialise! But I also like learning about this blogging world, I am slowly finding my blogging mojo again and whilst I want to stay true to blogging because it is for me and me alone, in truth I like to be engaged with those who are reading my words. And that means my blog might need to evolve to include some brand stuff. For me writing the brand stuff is a way for me to hone my "copy writing" skills which I used to use for work but no longer do and it is a skill I don't want to lose.
ReplyDeleteI do feel that I should say thank you for the awesomeness that we get in the goody bags, so I normally do an IG post to say thanks after the event and then move onto posting 500 images of my kids and dogs and running shoes...
I'm trying the whole FB page thing, as I would love for more people to engage on my blog and I am hoping this will help me get that interaction back which I inadvertently lost when I stopped blogging regularly.
(sorry for the blog post comment)
xxx
Leave as long a comment as you want :)
DeleteOh! Forgot to say as well that I am soon going to manage a FB page for work and wanted to figure out how it all worked before I manage something in a professional capacity :)
ReplyDeletexx
I was so bleak that I didn't go to the blog meet!
ReplyDeleteAs far as IG, my account is only for my photos, and I think a brand plug would ruin it... unless the photo is absolutely amazing of course ;)
or it was related to who you are!
DeleteDont change your style Marcia....i stopped reading most of the blogs because of the products. I have one or two that i read because they are real life friends but other than that...biggest turn off for me.
ReplyDeleteNope. No brand pics from me. I do agree that there needs to be two meetups. One for the "brand/PR/monetising bloggers and one for the authentic types who are not about that life. I wish I had time for FB all day - I am OBVIOUSLY not one of those Moms.
