Sleeping babies and Father's Day

Last night after seeing the millionth post on FB/ IG about Father's Day, I asked D what he thought of it all.

Turns out he still feels the same as I do.

Namely, that it's a bit weird to write on FB/ IG all these soppy messages when your husband/ father is right there/ at the end of a telephone line to receive your message in person instead of via the social media that he probably isn't even reading.

We've always thought the "to my two-year-old, you're the best little boy in the world" messages are SUPER weird.

(if you think they're cool and you do them, go right ahead :))

Your two-year-old can't read and shouldn't be on FB til he's 12/ 13?

I believe D mentioned things like "are you writing for your audience or the "beloved father"?"

Anyway, that's us.

If you and your father/ husband talk through FB, it's obviously a different matter :)

In the morning before I got ready for my exam, I got the kids cards and gift out and told them to go give it.

He loved it (or pretended very well). I need to take a few pics and show you....

I then got on with it, got myself ready and dashed out of there.

They went to church as we normally do.

I sent an SMS when I was back home afterwards and they came to fetch me so we could go out for lunch.

(Personally I hate lunches on 'theme days' - can we say crowds!!!! - but D loves eating out all the time, so out we went)

Came home, I finished a book and then slept with a child on my bed, the other child didn't want to nap and D watched the World Cup. I'm already over the World Cup.

By the way, I've now read 40 books for the year, 10 of which were physical books (YAY!). I have only 2 more physical fiction books to finish before my birthday.... and a TON of physical non-fiction.

I must say, there's nothing like a photo of a proper book though. I find myself taking iphone photos of the physical books next to my tea.... or in good light.... because the days are limited!

And then it was the bath/ supper/ stories and prayer routine.

Today D and I had a nap again and the kids played QUIETLY for an hour without destroying the house too much.

Could it be that they're growing up?

And a last little weird thing - I haven't enjoyed a cup of tea or coffee for a whole week.

I kept throwing out my tea and then I switched to coffee and kept throwing that out too.

Then I twigged.

It's the anti-biotics messing with my taste buds.

This is only the third lot of anti-biotics I've ever been on in my life (first the gall bladder when they didn't know it was my gall bladder), and then flu..... I remember last time I didn't enjoy my food so much but this time, it's been horrible.

My course ended on Sat night but my taste buds are still not normal. I'll confess I can't WAIT to really enjoy some Joko tea again.

How was your Youth Day?

So, Father's Day

You know how things just creep up on you?

Yes?

That was Father's Day for me.

Then again, my desk calendar says 1 May.... so life is a bit crazy but I'm trusting God for not much longer!

Anyway, D is, as you know, the best father in the world. I always knew he'd make a good father but I didn't know just how good.

I asked him tonight, "what does it feel like to be so totally ADORED by your kids?"

Kendra has a new thing where, when she hears that gate open, she announces with absolute GLEE, "Mummy! Your husband's home".

It's adorable. And then she sprints to the door - his very own welcoming committee.

So I printed a nice photo of D with the kids (one taken at the zoo in March), and I need to force them to sit still for two minutes to make a card for him.

And then I took them to Woolworths to buy him a nice winter jersey this evening. I said, "babies, which one should we get - black, navy or maroon?"

Connor said, "BLUE!" and Kendra was fine with that so I didn't argue and just went to pay.

He did tell me he wants some alone time on Sunday and to eat out with us, so I'm thinking a breakfast out before church, church, home for lunch and naps, and then I'll take them for a hot chocolate and muffin/ scone while D has some alone time, and then back home.

What are you doing for Father's Day?

no wonder she has no trouble trusting God to fix everything she can think of with this example of a loving father
PS these pics are in my 2013 MD and the kids folder :)

Father's Day plans

So I feel quite unprepared this Father's Day.

Last year I had to get prepared weeks before because of all the bits and pieces I had to get for D's Superhero basket.

blurry pic taken by D - I left it out and when I heard him see it, I shouted "take a pic before you open"

inside i said, "you're the best daddy in the world"

By the way, don't you think Superheros are a cute party theme? It's not the 3rd birthday party theme, by the way!

So this year.

D wants some me time and a meal out. Easy enough.

me time
I'm taking BOTH babies to gym with me (pray for me - seriously, especially after last Sunday morning) this morning. I think I'll bribe them to be good and tell them we can go to breakfast afterwards (they LOVE restaurants - clearly their father's children) if they behave.

At breakfast I plan to kill two birds with one stone - keep them occupied while we wait for food and get them to make the Father's Day cards :)

meal out
We decided Sunday breakfast was the best option as we both hate crowded restaurants on the special occasion days (service is worse, place is more crowded and food is more expensive).

gift
Well, we made a canvas handprint for MIL last week so while we were messing creating, we did one for D too.

Last night I glued on the ribbon and I will wrap that later.

What are you doing for Father's Day?

I especially want to hear your non-clutter gift ideas :) so I can store them in my mental memory box for next year.

PS I just phone my father who lives in PE
PPS It's Youth Day in South Africa today - I can't even think about all the injustices of the past!

Fathers Day ideas

I mentioned before that I'm not a crafty person although secretly I wish I were.

This is what I did for Father's Day last year.

I took pics of the kids, pasted them in a Word doc, printed them out (not even in colour) and then pasted that page to a card. I put the babies' handprints on the card while they protested loudly.

Not pretty but he loved it. Maybe because he knew I'd made the effort?

Anyway, this year, it's going to be a lot cuter!

I'm going to make him something like this:

Mine will be in a basket or maybe on a tray... and will have hero juice (root beer - D's favourite - I hate it), chips, mints, a bar of chocolate and some Whispers.

I think he will love it and yes, I will take pics before presenting.

Download the printables from Alphamom.

I'm also going to have this printed (yes, I'll pay :)) and put in a frame (I don't know where I got it as I just saved the printable before I decided to post about this)

I don't like unnecessary clutter and so I don't buy mugs and that kind of thing. I like meaningful stuff that leave the house quickly :)

So I also LOVE these ideas...

DAD photo frame

Movie bucket (for those in South Africa, Mr P Home has lovely popcorn buckets) - perfect for the quality time guy

Father's Day subway art - print and put in a nice frame - perfect for the words of affirmation guy

Super Dad printables (maybe for his morning muffin)

If you like the idea of subway art, but these ones don't quite do it for you, you could make your own with http://wordle.net. Just type in all the things you think about him and play around with it, and print.

Okay, so that's me.

What about you? What are you doing?

Our first father's day

Well, the non-crafty card was a hit!

I had it balanced on top of his mug ready with his coffee and sugar for his morning cup of coffee.

He seriously loved it, and loved it even more when I told him the story behind the card.

He nearly fell over but (wisely) didn't say anything when I told him to go enjoy his coffee in bed and I'd feed both babies breakfast (we usually do all the meals together unless one isn't there).

We're not into presents as such but we are into food (!) so yesterday V babysat and I took D for a nice lunch (he had grilled kingklip which was DELICIOUS and I had fettucine alfredo). Yes, it is a bit weird to go for a Father's Day lunch without the babies but as he said, it'll be a real treat to enjoy a meal without having to (1) shovel it down and (2) be able to talk to one another.

Connor's got this new thing (the last two weekends) where he doesn't want to have his morning nap AND he is also not sleeping in the car. Before, if they didn't nap at home before we had to leave for church (10:10), then they'd definitely fall asleep in the car.

No sleep = cranky Connor

Thankfully Kendra pops right off the minute we start moving - it's actually really sweet.

So church was good but C's crankiness was increasing . Thank God he fell asleep about half way home and because we wanted him to sleep as long as possible, we stopped at a shopping centre (D had to exchange something) and I stayed in the car until they woke.

Home for lunch and back out for our lunch. BUT the 25-minute sleep clearly wasn't enough because he was Crankypants with a capital C.

We had to eat very quickly (D was wise to have his proper lunch yesterday) and got him home where he had a proper nap.

Then the madness of supper, bath and bedtime - my favourite time of day. I love Connor in the bath (I laugh so much and it seems to excite him more) I have never seen anyone that passionate about water!
And Kendra is just too sweet and girly once she's in her pajamas and sleep sack. She looks like a little marshmallow every night, dressed in pink.

BTW, for those who asked, no, we don't have central heating... It's portable heaters all the way which do diddly squat in these old houses (big rooms, high ceilings and terrible to heat).

I asked D how his first father's day was and he says he loved it "obviously I could do with less of the Connor crankiness but it was great" LOL

So how was your weekend?

P.S. The two-hour computer limit is working well even though I've actually only come in under on one out of the four days. I'm working on some projects so once those are out of the way (end of this week) it should be easier. I'm a lot more focussed when I'm on here and best of all, my house looks better.
