My babies are here

The twins made a very unexpected and sudden arrival on Tuesday morning, 7 July. At 31 weeks 6 days by an emergency C-section.

Will tell you the whole birth story at a later date but wanted to at least post an update.

Kendra was born first at 2:50 am weighing a mere 1,590 kg (multiply 2,2 to get the weight in pounds).

Connor was born a minute later weighing 1.850 kg.

Together 3,5 kg of baby (a very healthy size for one baby, but obviously tiny for two of them).

They are both in neo-natal ICU - Kendra can breathe on her own but she is really tiny so needs to fatten up and get to 2kg.

Connor is on a ventilator but is apparently doing well (his blood stats improve every time they test them, which is 6-hourly) and should be off in the next day or so...

Me?

Physically I am totally fine (I recover very quickly from ops) but emotionally I am up and down.

I was fine until this morning and then started the crying thing. I try and block it out that those are MY tiny babies with tubes in them. But it's really difficult because that's not the picture I had in my head...I only go see them when my husband is here so he can give me a pep talk before and after. I'd much prefer to just hear the paediatrician's twice daily update as the verbal message sounds so much better than the visual reality. She is happy with their progress - keeps saying they are fine, just small. In a month's time they'll be perfect.

I don't even know what they look like (properly) because their faces are obscured by all the tubes ...and I haven't held them. I have only touched a hand and leg of each baby.

I am still in the hospital - will be discharged on Friday.

I tell you, this twins thing is not for the faint-hearted.

I'm very glad to hear your little girl & boy are doing good. I imagine it is very scary to see them & I can completely understand needing your husband there.

I'll be praying for you & Kendra & Conner & hubby.

  2. Oh Leigh!!

Congratulations! I'm glad all three of you are doing ok. Of course it's going to take a while to adjust to the reality v. the picture you'd imagined.
Wow. Thinking of you and your family. Hoping that every day Connor and Kendra get a little stronger and that you heal quickly as well.

  5. Wow! I wasn't expecting this AT ALL!!! I knew that twins are naturally born earlier than most singleton babies, so I figured you might have your babies before me. But you just went and cheated your way into, having them a whole 2 months early! :-)

Congrats on your brand new miracles!!! I can only imagine how scary it is to see them so tiny and covered in tubes, but I hope that you can still bask in the wonder of God's gifts. I'm sure they're going to be perfectly healthy as soon as they bulk up a bit.

Enjoy your dark-haired, dark-eyed babies. Welcome to the world, Kendra and Connor!!!

Don't know if you're a reader of Julie's blog "a little pregnant" but she had a post a while back when her son charlie was born early on dealing with a child (or children) in the NICU. Thought I'd pass the link along in case it's helpful. Thinking of you!

  8. What a surprise! I thought we would go together. I'm so glad that they are doing well and you are able to handle this. You are a far stronger woman than I! We send our love and hope that their stay won't be too much longer! Stay well!

  9. Congratulations Mama. I am so sorry that your sweet babies came so early and you can't truly enjoy them just yet. They will grow so fast and you will be holding them in no time, but I am sure it is so difficult right now. Sending lots of love and hugs from the states!

  10. Hugs winging their way to you! I know there is nothing that can really be said to make you feel better about the babies coming early and the stress of dealing with their prematurity...but hang in there. Thankfully it sounds like they are healthy and that is a blessing. I will be thinking of you, sending up lots of prayers for you and the twins and looking forward to updates on all three of you...and of course pictures when you're up to it.

Try not to worry too much. Rest and take care of yourself and they will be home with you soon.

  11. Oh my goodness! I really hope and pray that everything goes well. I can imagine that you are terrified and excited all at the same time. Who am I going to compare notes with now?! =)
I can't wait to see more updates and photos! You will get through this and so will your babies!!

  12. Hi Leigh,
Wow. They're here!! :) As absolutely scary as it is, it sounds like they are a good size and that they're doing really well in the NICU. Yay!! Soon they'll be free of tubes and other bits and pieces that are obscuring your view of them and you'll really be able to be 'at one' with them :) Although this wasn't how any of us would dream of meeting our babies, the great news is that they are doing well, you're okay and that like some of the others have said, a month from now you'll be focusing on how to feed two babies at once and trying to remember what life was like with just the two of you :) Congratulations hon, you've done really well!
