For starters, I don't really like bookclubby books.
If you look at any of those 100 books to read before you die lists, I can assure you I've read none of them, unless they were prescribed for Setwork at school.
True story.
Anyway, so that's my bookclub disclaimer.

I've started a new little thing at work due to the fact I can't get onto any blogs or anything really............. (very annoying!)
I read my Kindle app on the phone (yesterday I took in the ipad and it was even more glorious) and usually read a chapter a day of my non-fiction book. It's fantastic.
However, I must be a "sight" as people keep stopping by me in the pause area, confused that I'm reading.
D told me he gets the same reactions (and then we drove past a girl at a bus stop reading a mystery thriller - she was well past the Point of No Return though so she was clearly hooked) at his work and we were wondering if it's maybe a "people who work in the financial district" thing? :)
So, let's all be brave.

I did a spontaneous thing last night and decided to read this book as part of an online book club.
Yes, I know I'm not a book club person... but this seemed like fun.

About the author.... I read her 31 days series a few years ago on courage... and loved it.... and that series sparked off this book for her.
I love reading...but I don't belong to a book club. I guess I just don't like going out for a meet up during the week...just too tired after a days work.
ReplyDeleteI don't mind the meeting up - I just honestly don't think anyone likes to read the same books that I do. And I certainly don't want to discuss bookclubby books (serious ones :))
DeleteOh you know I love both reading and bookclub. But here is how we work - every month a member gets R50 from every member to buy books of her choice. With bookclub discount at Exclusive books you can buy to the value of around R750 for your R550. All books go into two big crates that make our library where you can borrow from. People buy anything - even childrens books or recipe books or self help type books. But mostly its popular reads - for instance most of the newer Jojo Moyes books are there - all the Deon Meyer books, if a new Sinead Moriarty comes out it will be bought. Books that are talked about a lot are bought - like I am Pilgrim, Fault in our stars, Rosie project, the Hunderd year old man etc. What is great is that you get the chance to read books and enjoy books you may never have thought of buying without spending money on them. And of course, my clutter is almost non existent

DeleteI love reading although I hardly have time to read anymore. I used to go to a book club when I was in PE which was so nice and social more than the actual books.

DeleteI have a friend who belongs to a bookclub - but she says if they talk about the books, that's about 10 mins mainly it's girl talk. They all read but they don't necessarily come together to talk about that book.
I've tried a book club...it's definitely not for me.
ReplyDeleteLove that you definitely know that. I suppose that's the thing with me. I know I read different things to the book clubs but I've ever actually been to a meeting and it's not something you can just go to once because it's a whole story to get "in" LOL
DeleteI love the idea of the social part of book club but I do not want to talk about my books. I like to talk but not about what I am reading. Hubby who also loves to read thinks I am slightly weird like that. I feel like it is an infringement on a very personal world that I build in my imagination while I am reading. I get very into my books and I cannot share that because it feels to personal.

Oh I so get you. Except I don't really find it personal, I just simply don't like to over-analyse things (which is really any talking too much about something - it puts me off).
DeleteI like the idea of a book club for the same reason I like the idea of a craft club.. the socialising! LOL! I don't really have time to read.. I'm just about managing the Psalms as it is! I go to bed early because I have to be up early, and before that I am BUSY!

ReplyDeleteI tried to join a book club earlier this year. It didn't work out. I attempted to sell our Lets Get Crafty model to them - they just wanted to complicate it sooooo much! So I sent an email and never heard from them again. The thing about this type of setup is that books (and crafting) are only a very small part of it - it's all about the socialising and the connecting. So yes, I would join a book club, specifically one where we don't all have to read the same book or the same types of books.
