Photos on your work desk?

That sliver of red peeking out on the left is the only photoframe I currently have on my desk.

At the old desk I had about 4 - 5 photo frames plus about 10 - 15 photos stuck up on my cork board.

I heard from two people recently that having pics of your kids, etc. on your work desk is not a great idea, career-wise.

The one lady was being interviewed on a podcast and said something like she wants to be an equal to her male colleagues........... and the other lady is a colleague of mine who has a kid but we never hear about him nor see him. I asked about a photo and she said no way would she have a photo on her desk.....

You all know how I feel. This is who I am - take me or leave me. I like that I care about the other parts of my life enough to display them - I don't necessarily think it takes away from my professionalism.

But what do you think?
Do you have pics of your kids/ family up at work?

  1. We're not allowed to. It's clean desk policy bla-bla. Then last year with one of their propoganda drops we got a photo frame mouse pad, go figure. I now have one photo there.

    1. Ha! "propaganda drops"/ branding exercises!

we also have a clean desk policy but that means at the end of every workday, no papers referring to client details should be out. Everything that mentions client stuff needs to be locked away.

  2. I have my own office so I guess its a bit different. My kids even spend time in the office... and so does some of the other staff's from time to time. I have that same red frame with a pic of me and H from the July beach shoot - and a frame with an old pic of the kids. Then we have the same lime green pinboards that we encourage the guys personalize so I have some work stuff on it and another 4 photos.

We pride ourselves that we function as a little family in the office - we acknowledge you have yours so lets see them!

    1. I doubt there is anything against it in my office as long as it is not overboard. one or two would do but Personally not for me, which answers the question no I don't have picturea on display at work

    2. Cat, definitely a benefit of a small company.

Mrs FF, I'm surprised at you! I'd love to know why not?

  3. I don't think it takes away from one's professionalism either. I just like to keep my work and private life separately, thus why I would not display photos of my family in an office environment.

I am no less professional because I have a family so why would I be less professional by having pictures of them in my work space? What rot! I am very proud to show off my beautiful family at work - I have a wedding photo and a photo of Kade and Gemma in frames on my desk and I also have several photo's up on my divider board. That said if I see customers I do mostly see them in meeting rooms BUT all of my customers know I am a mom and ask about my kids - it is part of who I am.

I don't have any photos up of my kids.. but they are on my screensaver. I just don't have space for them on my desk, sorry! And hanging up around my desk I have calendars, menus, codes, etc.. I just don't have space for them, shame, sorry!

  6. My DH has begged for me to make a photo frame for his office...so it isn't true that men don't do things like that.

  7. No photos. I like to keep my private life separate from my work. I also like a clean working space that's completely uncluttered. I don't think it makes you look unprofessional to have them - that's just ridiculous!
