Confession - breaking the formula rules
I decided to join in with Jennifer's confessions since I have TONS!
I guess I'm just not a rule-follower kind of gal.
So let's talk about bottles.
I buy cheap bottles for my kids
I fully intended to only use NUK bottles because of all the marketing mumbo-jumbo but the truth is that Connor didn't seem to like the Nuk in the beginning. I think it may have been because he was too small. Anyway, I went out and bought a couple of different (cheap) ones and he loved those. And that's how it started.
They still only have 4 Nuk bottles - the rest are the cheap stuff. All I do is replace the original teat (nipple) with better teats and they're good to go.
Now in a strange twist, Kendra now only wants to drink from Nuk so she is using all 4. Connor is a boy - not fussy in the least - he will have any bottle.
I mix up the formula before their feeds
We went to a multiples seminar when I was about 14 weeks pregnant and it was fabulous. Fabulous because those twin and triplet moms threw out all the rules. The main thing they emphasised was that multiples have their own rules (none!) and that you do whatever you need to do to survive. Lovely!
On the formula can it says not to mix up the formula before the time but there was a nurse at the seminar who said it can be done as long as it's not left out.
So I mix up as many feeds as there are bottles available, stack them in the fridge and they're good to go. No messing around with formula when they're ready to eat.
Which brings me to my next point...
My kids have their bottles at room temperature
Horror of horrors, they actually don't need to be warm! I know!!!! I was just as amazed at first. Another little gem I learned at the seminar.
And with twins, you often don't have the time to warm everything when you have a screaming baby. True.
So my kids have had their bottles at room temperature since they left the NICU. In fact the other day I'd just mixed a batch of bottles when Connor was ready for a feed and when I gave him the warm bottle of milk, he actually pulled his face because he's not used to it :)
When the bottles had to come out of the fridge, I'd place one in a mug of boiling water to take off the chill until I read Jennifer's post about microwaving bottles.
And since then, no more of this time-wasting nonsense.
I zap the bottle in the microwave for 10 sec (K) and 20 sec (C) and they're good to go. Just takes the edge off but doesn't warm it too much.
Of course we swirl and shake properly so there are no air pockets!
I know you're all sitting there with mouths open in shock but seriously, did you really expect me to make up a bottle every one to two hours? :)
Your turn! What are your bottle or formula confessions?

LOL! I love it! We do that! Cheap bottles, premade bottles-it's all good! The only difference is I take laziness to a new level and we have cold bottles. Straight from the fridge or cool! At night I'll premake bottle and shove them in a cool and add BM as I pump! And I have been known to reuse a dirty bottle to feed a screaming child! Who has time to wash 50 bottles?! LOL

ReplyDeleteI do not warm BB's bottles either. I use Nursery Water (purified, made just for formula, although it's most likely not necessary)and just add the powdered formula when she is ready to eat. Before going to bed, I fill the bottles with water and add the formula once she is ready to eat. I don't like having it in the fridge because it just takes too much time to go to the kitchen. Especially at night! (She sleeps in a bassinet in our room)
ReplyDeleteWhen we were in the hospital the formula was room temp. So I decided right then that if it was ok in the hospital then it was ok for home!
Your babies are beautiful! Hopefully they will start sleeping more and more. BB has her moments. Last night she slept from 9:30 to 12:30. I put her back to bed at 1:30 and she was up at 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, etc....she does this whining thing...not asleep and not awake. I have her in the Moby wrap now and she is finally sleeping. I love this baby but I will be glad when we can get on a schedule!
By the way, no judgements here! You take great care of your babies and they are your top priority!
The best advice I was given was : Your baby will get used to anything you let it.....so no he never had a warm bottle and to this day is quite happy eating room temp food !!
ReplyDeleteCan't believe it's 13 weeks - I know I only started feeling human again at 12 weeks too - so get the not loving newborn stage....roll on no.2 !!
xx C
We do the same thing. We have 8 bottles and we mix up the formula ahead of time, setup all the bottles in the fridge and have an extra container of formula ready-made just in case. Our boys will take either lukewarm or warm bottles. They don't like cold, which is fine. We do lukewarm when we're on the go. If we go out, I bring the bottles filled with water and have pre-measured powder formula in a container setup for a few 6 oz bottles.
ReplyDeleteWe do cheap bottles here too! He has a few Playtex VentAire but for the most part we use Parents Choice and they work just fine. :)
ReplyDeleteWe also don't warm the bottles. TOO. MUCH. WORK. Us busy mommies just don't have time for it! If they needed it, I would do it, but it's just something else to do.
