Sleep when your baby sleeps.
Oh my word.
This is what I used to do when they slept ...
- clean bottles
- make up bottles
- do baby laundry
- tidy house
- cook supper
- eat breakfast
- shower and get dressed
- blog/ SMS/ phone - to connect with outside world
- phone medical aid company - in those early days I phoned them nearly daily to check that claims were being paid - freaky when you get copied on THOUSANDS being claimed by the health professionals
Now that may not necessarily be bad advice for everyone but for anyone who knows me, how on EARTH would I be able to sleep having a to-do list that long?!
Okay, let's have some fun.
What's the worse advice you've ever been given, either as a mother, or just as a person?

yeah.... when people would say 'sleep when the baby sleeps' I used to pretty much burst into tears and say 'WHICH ONE???'
ReplyDeleteThat was my worst advice, too.
Don't worry about getting them on a schedule right away...do what each baby needs. They'll fall into their own routine.
ReplyDeleteNever followed it. Set a schedule from DAY ONE. Couldn't be happier that I did. The most important thing was MY sanity and with the schedule that I set, I was able to hold onto that!
I do think that is true though! But with a caveat - sleep when they do in the morning. So I would always nap when they did in the morning - how else do you deal with middle of the night wakeups from TWO kids? I did bottles, etc. during afternoon sleeping time. As for eating...well, you can eat in front of your kids at this age - at my kids' age they want what I am having so it is harder. :)
ReplyDeleteThe worst advice I just got was from my mom - "turn on the TV and then they'll learn to talk." WHAT?
I have two that I would list as the worst. The one was a woman asking me why we didn't name Tommy something more modern like Trey (he's Thomas III after dad and granddad). My husband is called Tommy by all his sisters, so I took offense.
ReplyDeleteThe other one I think I blogged about. I was at a holiday party when we were just starting to tell people we were pregnant and that it was twins. Someone had the nerver to bring up, "You know just because you're pregnant with twins doesn't mean you're going to have twins." Ouch! Especially since I have a friend that did lose one of her twin boys in childbirth while she was being monitored in the hospital. I was painfully aware of that possibility. You just don't say stuff like that to a pregnant lady!
Heather - OMG!!! :O That is absolutely disgusting!!
ReplyDeleteLeigh, I'm with you on the sleep when they sleep bit - it just wasn't realistic.
I think the worst bit of advice that I received was about breastmilk - it was the worst piece of advice because it did my head in. It was that trusty old line "if you really want to do it, and you try hard enough, your body will make enough milk". Aha. What a CROCK.
Heather, you "win" - that is the WORST comment ever.
ReplyDeleteLOL Saffy - absolutely a crock!
Claudia - I know! The babies do sleep but not at the same time, or very rarely :)
Mommy Esq - I agree that it works for some, just not for me. In fact, spoke to a friend yesterday who breastfeeds and has only now (at 11 months) started sleeping when the babies sleep - she says she feels like a different woman :)
